Create and activate your SumUp account
With SumUp you accept card payments via a physical card reader (Solo, Air, 3G) or the SumUp App Tap to Pay. This article walks you through every step - both on SumUp's side and in Salonnare.
Step 1: Create a SumUp account
- Go to sumup.nl and click Sign up (top right).
- Enter your details:
- Company name: as registered with the Chamber of Commerce
- Chamber of Commerce number: required for business use
- VAT number: optional
- IBAN: the account where payouts are deposited
- Confirm your email address using the link SumUp sends you.
- Upload identification (passport or ID) for KYC verification.
Expected waiting time: usually activated within 24 hours, sometimes 1-3 business days.
Step 2: Order a card reader or activate Tap to Pay
Physical card reader
- Go to sumup.nl/kaartlezers.
- Choose a model:
- SumUp Solo - €99 - touchscreen, own WiFi/4G, works without a phone
- SumUp Air - €39 - works via Bluetooth with your phone
- SumUp 3G - €129 - touchscreen + built-in receipt printer
- Order and wait for delivery (2-5 business days).
- Once it arrives: log in to the SumUp app (iOS/Android) and connect the reader via Bluetooth/WiFi.
Tap to Pay (without hardware)
For modern Android phones (Android 11+ with NFC):
- Download SumUp from the Google Play Store.
- Log in with your SumUp account.
- Activate Tap to Pay in the menu - this requires SumUp to approve your phone for in-person payments (within a few minutes).
- The customer taps their card against your phone → the payment goes through directly.
iOS Tap to Pay is not yet available in the Netherlands with SumUp.
Step 3: Activate the card reader in the SumUp dashboard
For the Salonnare connection, your reader must be linked to your SumUp profile:
- Log in to me.sumup.com.
- Go to Devices or Card Readers.
- Verify that your reader has the status Active.
- If the reader is missing: in the SumUp app, go to Settings > My devices > Add.
Step 4: Connect Salonnare to SumUp
- Log in to your salon dashboard in Salonnare.
- Go to Settings > Connect payments > SumUp Terminal.
- Click Connect.
- You'll be redirected to SumUp. Log in with YOUR SumUp account.
- Authorize access for Salonnare.
- You return to the Salonnare page. The status shows Connected with your merchant code.
Selecting a reader in Salonnare
After connecting, you choose in the same section which of your SumUp readers the salon uses for card payments. Do you have several readers (e.g. one per staff member)? Then you link a reader per stylist via Chair rental and per-stylist payouts.
Troubleshooting
"403 Insufficient scopes: requires [readers.read terminals.read]" in the server log
Cause: SumUp has not yet given Salonnare's app the correct scopes to retrieve your readers.
Solution: this is on Salonnare's side, not your account. We have requested the scope extension (readers.read + payments) from SumUp Developer Support. As soon as it comes through, we'll ask you to reconnect via Disconnect + Connect so your token gets the new scopes.
The reader does not appear in the dropdown in Salonnare
- Check on me.sumup.com > Devices that the reader is set to Active.
- In Salonnare: Settings > Connect payments > SumUp → click Refresh or Disconnect + reconnect.
- Make sure your SumUp app is open and the reader is online (Bluetooth connection active for the SumUp Air).
"Account not approved for card payments"
Wait until SumUp has completed your KYC verification. Status check at me.sumup.com → My account. Call SumUp support on +31 20 712 0140 if it takes longer than 3 business days.
Payments work in the SumUp app, but not in Salonnare
SumUp's payments scope is a restricted scope that has to be approved separately per integration. Without that scope, Salonnare's backend cannot trigger a card payment directly - your salon can then only use the SumUp app directly (payments do appear in your SumUp dashboard, but not automatically in your Salonnare order history).
We have requested this scope. Until then: use the SumUp app for the actual payment, and enter it manually as a cash sale in Salonnare.
Frequently asked questions
What are the SumUp rates?
Per card transaction: 1.69% for Dutch debit cards (Maestro / V Pay / Vpay). Credit cards slightly higher. No fixed costs, no subscription. One-off hardware: €39-€129 for the reader. See sumup.nl/tarieven for current rates.
Do I receive my money directly into my account?
Standard within 1-3 business days into your IBAN. Premium subscribers get instant payouts.
Does SumUp also work offline?
Yes - the reader caches transactions for up to 24 hours if WiFi/4G drops out. Note: all transactions must be completed online within the cache window, otherwise they are declined.
Can I ask for a tip via SumUp?
Yes, configurable in the SumUp app under Settings > Tip. Salonnare's POS flow supports a tip prompt if activated on your reader.
